Service light. on Turbo
The service light comes on every 5,000 miles.
The dealer reccomends every 5,000 miles but that is 2 long for turbo cars.
It should be done every 3,000 miles.

Hi AJ,

The manuals will be deleted within the next few days so be quick!
P.S: OBD-I is available only for '93-'95 models, and for '96 & '97, you have to visit AutoZone or other auto parts shop that provide free OBD-II diagnostic service. For service light, I believe either the dealer or your own reset tool (sold at on-line vendors for approx $160
).

I have been told if you use full synthetic on a turbo you can go the 5000 mile interval, but if you use regular dino oil you should go 3K. Personally I have gone 5K with synthetic on our turbo, but only once. I prefer the 3K just to be safe. Just my .02
Hi AJ,
Most generic OBD-II scanners can access the engine, ignition& transmission ECUs only. For ABS, climate control and other systems, you need to have the manufacturer's test equipment (I could be wrong, if you spend $600, you may be able to find a sophisticated OBD-II scanner, or VADIS may also allow some access, as RedTurbo mentioned).

Anyway, I just found a quote from our electronic wiz, named Axelm, which seems quite helpful:
Quote:
>The ISO tool from www.obd-2.com will reset the service light and the CEL, among other things.
Or, you can just open the hood and turn it off via OBD-I

I wonder...Tech, does your shop have Vadis?
I was doing some research online, apparently most shops can't afford it, and this is Volvo's way of getting people to go to the dealer and getting around the Federal P0 code regulations....

Yes we have it.
But one thing everyone needs to know is that Vadis only works on cars 1999 and newer.
In 2005 they went to another system called VIDA.
If it wasn't for me my shop wouldn't have the vadis. They had the VCT2000 interface box. I had the program and I set it all up. I am the main one that uses it.

Sometimes they take a break from selling them. But you should be able to find one.
But remember that is only the program. Not the interface box. That is really hard to find and pretty expensive as well.
But the program has a great section on how to replace parts and also a good parts section.

I had my 1996 850 Turbo serviced (for a safety recall repairs) at a Volvo dealership in Georgia.
And ever since the visit, my service light stays on for about a minute (after ignition is on) and goes out eventually.
Is this a coincidence or has dealership done something to the car?
Or if the service light is supposed to be illuminated at every 5K miles, is this just a friendly reminder that it's time for oil change?
Secondly, I used full synthetic motor oil and it seemed to losing oil (about a quart @ 2K miles).
If some of you has experienced a similar case and fixed the problem, could you share your troubleshooting/repair tips? I don't know what kind of motor oil the previous owner used, but I've heard about switching from traditional to synthetic oil will cause oil leak etc. It is time for another oil change, but if there is better "full synthetic" brand with sealant out there, I will certainly give that brand a try.
Thanks!

Is there any way to turn off that 5K friendly reminder for good?
If I don't want to purchase obd-1 or 2, I suppose I could disconnect Battery to reset the service light? It just seems silly to purchase obd-1 or 2, since I don't mess with car that much.
Back to oil usage, would you elaborate on the area I need to check for oil leaks and what vent system do I need to to check and how? Sorry that my knowledge is up to your level, so please bear with me asking dumb questions here.
Also, my radiator developed a pin hole leak (on the right front side of the radiator) above the radiator hose. Has anyone used "JB weld" to seal it? Any reason why I shouldn't use that product?
Thanks!

1. Removing the bulb is the only way to put it out for good.
2. Check under the car above the drain plug for the oil. The oil return lines are known to leak. Also check where the transmission attaches to the motor. After driving for a little bit with the car running does smoke come out of the dipstick bad?(Like a freight train)
3. JB Weld might work but most of the time it doesn't I would try to get the radiator changed out soon.
