Smog Test and Air Pump Work
Hello, I have a 1997 850 with close to 150K miles. I live in the east SF bay area. Every two years in California, we need a smog test. This 850 has some trouble getting past the smog test every two years. I have been told that the reason for this is that an airpump and solenoid valve and check valve all need replacing so that the check engine light will go off and I can pass the smog test after that work has been done. The job will cost 1100 dollars. I've been told that a 4.50 bottle of fuel system solution (bardahl's All-U-Need or CRC) will pass the smog test but I worry it would damage the fuel system. Your expertise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
The miracle in a can stuff will do nothing to turn of the Check Engine Light if the underlying problem is with the air pump. A number of people have modified Volkswagen air pumps to work on their Volvosfor a significant savings in money.
