Transmission Won't engage after smog test
Hi All,
I own a 1985 740 GLE sedan. As I live in California I have to get the volvo smog tested every 2 years. This week I drove it to the smog test station to get a test. When the car was finished I went to drive it out of the garage and the transmission would no longer engage. Basically the engine would rev, but I would only go 1-2 mph. We drained some transmission fluid and put in transmission additive, let the car cool, but it still won't drive. I should also note that the volvo goes into and drives in reverse fine. I've owned the car for 4 years and it had never exhibited problems with the transmission before. The car has *very* low miles for its age, 90,000 because was owned by a student and prior to that the student's grandma who only drove to the store and back for years. It is currently still at the smog station, but I need to decide what to do with it soon. Specifically I have afew questions:
1. Is the tranmission shot or could something simple have come out of adjsutment?
2. The owner of the smog station, who seems like a nice-enough guy offered to put a tranmission in for $200 provided I can find one. Would anyone go for this and if so will any transmission from this year and model work? I have found one for the 740 GLE turbo (zf-hp-22), but not the non-turbo one (which is what I have)?
3. My other option is to take it to a transmission shop that estimated $750 to a max of $1150 for a rebuild. Does this seem like a better option?
These things seem to have a reputation of running forever and I was hoping to get years more of use out of it given its low miles. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I believe my trans is original and after 256,000miles I am just hoping it will last till I look into a Getag swap
Go to a junkyard and find one. I know there are a coulpeof used AW-71s andAW-70sfor sell at turbobricks, but i don't know if you can use those.
