Default smoke+smell

after searching the subforum for smoke related posts, i think i have 2 issues mixing together. after about an hour on the highway, i park and turn off for about.. 20min or so. i start to leave, and it wont start. cranks great, no unusual sounds, just no firing up. i step on the throttle about 50%, and it starts up, i let off, and it immediately dies. wont start again without holding the throttle down, and keeping it around 2k rpm for 30-45sec, and then it will hold idle on its own. while backing out, i drove thru a cloud of smoke, and it smelled like a firecracker went off, or hot metal. it triggered a memory of a previous piece of crap that would overheat in about 1/2 a mile. mine isnt overheating, the temp gauge stays midway, but its not always there, such as first startup in the morning.

after reading the other forum posts about smoke color, i had a friend go behind the car and watch it start up. the car has now been sitting about 30min again, but its been at least an hour since the highway. it started 1st try, and a large plume of either white or light blue (neither of us could pick, it was... light), and then no smoke at all - other posts say this is condensation, but this time smells of coolant.

its a 95 T5R, sittin at 163k, and is an oil burner, (in town, 1/2 a quart a month) has been for the 2 yrs ive had the car. no leaks, new oil cooler and cooler lines, religious about changes

also, dealer recently told me my check engine light came on about some sort of valve or controller involving emissions- told me it would only affect my MPG's if anything, so didnt bother spending the $400 to fix it. after their diagnostic, the light hasnt come back on, 500mi or so since

Oil smoke in exhaust is white; takes awhile to dissipate.

Coolant being burned comes out as steam, which is also white, but it dissipates rather quickly.

If you are really smelling burnt coolant, you will see the coolant level going down over time; unless the missing coolant is displaced/replaced by oil getting into the coolant.... do you see where I am going with this? Only thing that doesn't fit is it's not overheating at all; but the problem could be just starting too...

Look closely at the coolant in the reservoir looking for signs of oil. Coolant should be replaced every 2-3 years; so how long has it been?
