Smoking dipstick after PCV service
#21
rspi- yeah I cleaned out the larger upper port (not too much in there if I remember correctly) and the smaller lower port- pretty clogged up. The canister port on the bottom was about 80% clogged. replaced the canister, didnt just clean it. I didnt stick the shop vac on the port to give it a good suck out, maybe I should've.
The flame trap in the kit was not the same as the part that was already there, so I cleaned the old one in the laundry sink till every spec of glop was out of there. Dave

pcv
wheels- You know I was thinking about almost the exact same idea. My thought was to get an extra oil fill cap at my local u pull it, drill a hole in the center and add a 90 degree fitting. Attach a hose to the fitting and run it to some lower location (away from cabin air intake). Vent it out that way. The only problem there (or with the dip stick idea) is I’d have to remove either of those lines every time I add or check my oil. Wondered if there might be another line I could tap into for adding an additional vent that I could just leave in place. Think I will do a compression check just to understand better what’s going on in there. Dave

smoke
Well that would kinda suck! My pcv kit was from ipd, figured it was good. The kit came with way too many parts- parts for several different models. I did call them after I had the parts to confirm fit based on the numbers on the bags. I was left with many unused parts (that I paid for). The oil box looked exactly like the one that came out, fit right on there.
If I had to do it all over again, I'd wait till summer (when I can commute on the motorcycle) take it all apart, and buy only the items I needed instead of the kit. Oh well.
rspi, what's your opinion on adding a second vent line? I know now a plugged pcv increases crankcase pressure (dipstick smoke), do worn rings also increase crankcase pressure? Dave

Well, I don't think iPd send out many bad kits. Usually correct parts. I have heard that about NA PCV kits (extra parts).
Yes worn pistons and valves do cause crank case pressure. That's why I did a compression test before I replaced our cam seals. I will say that not all cars smoke out of the dip stick. My T-5R did not and the system was badly plugged up and crud in the block. I replaced it because I did not know the history and it seemed like the tubes were old (I also had a slight RMS leak). It still does not smoke after the PCV replacement.
My daughter is in town so I checked her car and it still smokes a little from the dip stick. I replaced that system about 18 months ago. Wow, I just asked here, I did that in the summer of 2009 so it's been 30 months. I replaced the cam seals about a year ago. Her car was so bad it was blowing the dipstick out.
I would not add a vent but I did see where someone else did.
