Default Speedo not working

Hi guys,

I have a working yazaki cluster in my 1995 850 wagon. I bought a VDO cluster out of a 96 model with trip computer in it and went to put it in the car, but the speedo in the VDO cluster isnt working.

Now I know it isnt my ABS module, because when I put the original one back in, it works fine.

Where should I start looking for the cause of the malfunction on the VDO cluster?

I noticed one of the three silver screws on the back of the VDO cluster which is directly in line with the speedo was only half screwed in. Could this be the cause?

The trip computer doesn't work in the yazaki cluster, there is not enough wires in the grey plug.

Any suggestions?

You cant swap cluster types. If you have a yazaki, you need to stay with a yazaki. The wiring is different. Aside from that, there is the possibility that the speedo gear is broken in the new cluster but I cannot be 100% sure with that since when I was toying with clusters and discovered the incompatibility I did not drive the car so it could be attributed to the cluster type.

Aaaah, that might be the case.

In other threads I have read, I was led to believe they were interchangeable between the two, as the 850 comes prewired as top of the range.

I had a look at a pdf document which documents diagnosis, and it lists both clusters, but doesnt mention there was a wiring difference.

Will have to find a yazaki cluster with the trip computer then.

Ok, so I have compared the wiring diagrams between the two, and I have found the difference.

My 95 model uses the speed sensor direct to the cluster, using pins 2 and 3 (green/yellow and yellow/brown).

The cluster out of the 96 gets it's signal from the ABS unit, only using pin 3 (yellow/brown).

Is there a way to get the 96 cluster to recognise the signal directly from the speed sensor, or am I better off hunting around for a pre 96 cluster? Or even a way to modify my car to send a signal the cluster will recognise?

Apparently you can switch between the two types (yazaki and VDO) provided they are the same series (pre 96, post 96) etc.

Getting a cluster here in Australia with a trip computer is rare, so it would be great to be able to get this working.
