Default SRS and ABS lights

My SRS light is on, being a new owner of a volvo I figured it was just telling me I have SRS in the car, just found out that is due to a fault, is there a way to retrieve the fault code or do I bring it to a volvo dealer and remortage my house, Also my abs light comes on when I step on the brakes, I just changed the front pads and will change the rear tomorrow, is this a warning indiaction light as well?
1997 850 T5
P.s this being my first volvo ever, I love the car, have a few issues with it that I'll be searching for in the forums, but I'm extremly happy with the purchase, of course im coming from a mercury topaz,so who wouldnt be happy lol

SRS light on means there's a fault in the SRS system and (as far as i know) only the dealer can read it; it may be need nothing more than to be reset, or you may need to take a 2nd mortgage out on your house.... But note, while the SRS fault is there, your air bags will not fire.

ABS unit has a fault also; it may be the typical ABS Control Module solder issue; can be a DIY repair if you're up for it...

Definitely get the SRS system looked at as soon as you can. Like gdog mentioned, the system is shutdown when the light is on so if something were to happen, none of the air bags would fire. This is a dealer only reset so unfortunately, you will need to take it in.

As for the ABS, there is an issue there also. Have the dealer scan for ABS codes also and let us know what comes up.

ok, due to my noobiness with reading lighs on the dash, the light I thought was abs is actually a burnt out bulb light, every time i press the brake that light comes on. Found out its my rear window brake light. But yesterday while driving, after replacing front pads, I hammered on the brakes to make sure everything worked, THEN my abs and some trac off light came on? when I turned off car and turned it on thoses lights went out, but I will ask the dealership for that. On another note I changed the battery and found out while getting into car it has an alarm, lol.Wish this came with a manual lol. I found one at newvolvocars.com and its come in handy for the new volvo owner. I'll let ya know what dealer says on tuesday. Thanks for your help.

i believe the 94-95 850s DONT have to be dealer reset, as i reset mine since its a 94 850. i forget where i saw that info, probably here or mathewsvolvo site...

all i know is my SRS light was on as well as my CEL for a bad MAF and low EGR flow. cleaned EGR, changed maf and i did the SRS reset while those were being changed/cleaned.

that was about 3-5 months ago.
