I have a 97 850 GLT wagon, It starts OK but once in a while I cannot shift to Drive. I alsonoticed that when this problem occurrs,everything electric also does not work, such asthe side mirror motor, headlights etc. I have to turn off the carand then start itagain, sometimes more thanonce,inorder for theproblem todisappear. Iwas looking at theHaynes repair manual electrical wiring diagram to understand it butit is not clear to me especially on　”3/1”after key position and termial.Does this indicatea relay number 3? and whereis thelocation for terminal and relay for these?
Id really appreciate your help and comments

Sounds like you need to replace the electrical portion of the ignition switch.

And if that doesn't solve the problem, you may also have to replace the PNP switch (though I too assume the ignition switch may be starting to go):

Ignition switch: US$51
PNP switch: $110 for genuine Volvo, $80 for Scan-tech (if it were my car, I would go with genuine Volvo).

I hope this gives you some hints.

I received the ignition switch from fcpgroton and replaced it 3 days ago
So far no more problem, I believe the ignition switch was culprit.
