My 1995 Volvo 850 is having problems starting. My car will start right up some days and on others it can take up to 5 min. I replaced the old battery thinking that was the problem but that did not fix the problem. When I try starting the car the engine makes a wirrling sound and sometimes won't make a sound at all. Does anyone have an idea what the problem may be?

 

Does the starter crank slow when you have a hard time starting? If so, (and battery is fully charged; did you ck?) then likely poor connection(s) at cables or the starter is ready for rebuild/replacement.

You say it sometimes makes a whirring sound; you mean like the bendix is not engaging the flywheel?

If I am talking greek to you, make a recording/video of the sounds and upload or put on utube and give us the link.

 

Without more information, it does sound like it could be the starter
