Default Starter Relay

My 855 won't start.

Put in the key and turn and it doesn't crank.

Christmas tree on the dashboard.

Fuel pump active.

Sometimes I'll get a click like a relay and sometimes not.

I've seen a number of references to a "starter relay" but no instructions on where it is.

Help?!

Beyond the solenoid on the starter itself there is no starter relay. The only thing between the ignition switch and the starter is the PNP switch if you have an automatic transmission.

Try starting it in neutral and see what happens.

Short answer...probably a dead starter.

Get a piece of wood, like a 2x2, a couple feet long, and stick one end down against the starter and tap on it lightly while someone turns the key. You might get it to engage, but it probably won't crank very well. If so, it's dead.

Give the shifter a good rowing through the gears to see if that helps. If not, then try the "bang the starter" fix and see if that helps. Let us know how you make out.
