Steering rack oil leak

Hello chaps,
I have been a bit of a lurker here so far, so I hope you do not mind me asking this question:
My mechanic a while ago said there was a steering rack oil leak with my 1995 Volvo 850 S (290,000km). It's not dripping anywhere that I can tell, and if it's losing any fluid at all, it is hardly any. The meachanic can't really recall what the leaked look like/was - I forgot to ask him at the time (a few months ago).
I sometimes have subtle shudder at times that sort of goes through the car (not just the steering wheel) when I turn to the left when the steering is under a bit of the load. The car also wears the front left tyre out slightly quicker than the front-right, but that is probably unrelated.
What I was wondering is - could the leak and the shudder likely been related, and is this leak a possibly serious and expensive problem? Could I be doing further damage to the steering by not doing much just yet?
Any advice or experience you wise guys would be appreciated!
Thanks in advance.
Kind regards,
Rudy
PS - I take it a not-seated-correctly driver's side front coil is referring to the suspension?
