Default stopping prooblem

I have an 850R in which I have just finished replacing the waterpump, cam belt and rebuilding the head. It started up OK but will not stop unless I press one of the buttons on the remote.
Any suggestions as to the cause?

Hi and welcome to the site.

Are you saying that you turn the car off, pull the key out and the motor keeps running? If so, I'd say you have a bad ignition switch, the electrical part.

update
the problem has increased to where the car will not start and i thought it was an ignition fault but i gave the remote button a push and then the car would start. went to stop it and it would not so used the remote button and it stopped, but then would not start again. did a bit of research which lead me to take out a relay under the steering coloum to bypass the starter lock out curcuit. research sugested it should be 120/211 turned out to be a volvo supplied bypass unit already installed. Any ideas where to next.
Cheers
Paul

The alarm system normally just interrupts the wire which sends ground to the starter in order to trigger it. It is a very primitive immobilizer function, cars with no alarm installed have a plug which is a "stupid" bridge.

I would take out the alarm relay and bridge the contacts as shown in the pic. If the motor starts and stops correctly than you found the culprit...however I doubt it that this is the real source for your trouble, assuming the electrics were not tempered with.

the 210/11 rely has already been replaced by what looks like an o/e part that is just a solid link in a relay case.
I am on the trail of another starter switch from a wrecker and will replace it but I can't get my head away from it being in the inhibitor system somewhere because when i tried to start it the other day it wound over fine but was stone dead, not a kick. But when I pressed the buttton on the remote and tried again it started straight away. But after running it for about 20 mins and getting it up to temp (just done water pump, cam belt and head reco) I stopped it and it would not start.
Cheers
