Suggestions on where to find a CHEAP engine
I need to find a replacement engine for my '97 Volvo 850 non turbo. So far my cheapest option seems to be the local JunkYard, was wondering if anybody had any better ideas. If you know where I can a brand new engine for cheap
First off "brand new" and "cheap" arent gonna work together, especially with the word "volvo" in there. A junk yard is probably going to be your best bet. I'm guessing that a new complete engine from volvo would be around 5 grand.
go to the JY with a compression tester. Make sure you grab everything around the engine as well even though you may not need it. It's easier to work on the engine while it's out of the car. When you find the engine with good compression and no leaks, order the T-belt, water pump and tensioners, PCV system, oil, hoses, coolant, exhaust gaskets, and filters. Get some carburetor cleaner and degreaser. Pressure wash your engine bay. Find a friend who has swapped out an engine before to give you a hand. Set aside 2 days to tinker with the car.
doing all this yourself would definitely save you at least $1000 in labor.
