Default Cheap S40 - But theres any engine grinding noise

Hi forum

I've a chance of purchasing a Volvo S40 2.0s on a "52" plate from our head office.

The cars done 75k and has been fully serviced by a local garage (non volvo franchise)

The car drives ok but there is a rhymical grinding noise on tick over.

I have had varying advice on what the problem could be

1. VT Pulley and VT Pulley Belt (don't know whether the engine has VT?)
2. Cam Shaft Reset Valve

Does anyone else have any ideas or previous experience of this problem. Any guidance would be great.

The car is fairly cheap so as long as it is not a disasterous fault I can afford to spend a bit on it. Garage speculation puts a rough price of £300 - £500 on resolve the fault

Hello mate,

Welcome to the forum, I hope it would be helpful & enjoyable for you.

As to S40, my knowledge is limited as I'm an 850 driver. I would highly suggest that you post the same question in the S40 forum, or wait until the top-dog of the forum named Moderator Tech replies.

Good luck,

JPN

Have it checked by someone thats knows the car.
It might be a timing belt tensioner or idler getting ready to go bad.
Maybe the VVT reset valve or anything. Hard to say with out hearing it myself.
