Default Sunroof being bad

I seem to be experiencing a new problem. My sunroof will not move back into the roof. It will raise upward at the back end for venting. I can hear the motor straining to try to move the roof backward. It does not even drop downward when trying to slide it back. It was having some difficulty last week when I tried to slide it back, as I could hear that it was straining as it was getting near the end of its travel inside the roof when opening(you know how you can just hear the motor working harder?).
Anyone?

Hello Maxbaby,

>I seem to be experiencing a new problem.
There is always a new problem to 850[8D].

850's sunroof is notorious for failing.

Try visually inspecting the rail, you might find the plastic rail eroded from lubricant, or there may be foreign objects. I once had similar problem, only mine did not want to close. After disassembling the roof, I found that the right side rail was shot, and there is a scissors type mechanism that has to have correct alignment, or the roof will not close.

You can get to the rails by removing the glass, though you may have to re-align it when you reinstall it/

Good luck,

Thanks for the reply. When you say the rail needs lubricant, what kind would you use?

Hello MB,

I personallyavoidusingwhite lithium grease on plastics, as they tend to erode. I usually use stick-type lube, which is almost transparent. But the best bet is to ask a technician at a dealer to see what they use. The key is to clean first, then apply just enough grease to make it smooth. Or you could apply WD-40 onto a lint-free cloth and wipe the metal parts with it.

I hope this helps. If not, someone else could jump in with better solutions.
