Default Tacho trouble

Hi, I have a volvo 850R 1996. I have a problem with the Tacho. When the has not running the tacho needle is sitting well below the 0 RPM on the gauge. When you start the engine it goes up and reads 0 RPM so it is about 700 RPM out. When you rev the motor the tacho goes up and down as it is supposed to ,just seems to be about 600-700 RPM out. Does anyone know how I fix this??? I think the person before me has repaired the speedo /Odometer nylon wheel at some stage as the plastic window has a small crack and the speedo reads fine. I am just wondering if they could have moved something when fixing that. If anyone can help that would be great. Thanks in advance.

I am about to do the odometer repair and from what I understand, yes, (re)setting the tach/speedo is part of the repair. People have warned about being careful of this step.

Your needle is off, you need to re seat the needle at the correct point

Best to research the odometer gear replacement instructions. You can Google it and get them here, IPD, Volvospeed and Matthewsvolvosite to name a few.

It's likely someone was in there and put the needle back on in the wrong position.

Tip for the wise... don't try to squeeze the cluster out of the 1/2 removed/ raised dash, you will damage the dash pad. Remove the dash pad totally. They are fragril and will break and make noise forever.
