I have 1995 850 Non-turbo w/ about 165000 miles. The car is noisy when accelerating, and my mechanic says it's "engine pipe/flexible pipe" leaking exhaust gases. since the pipe is a part of the exhaust manifold he adised me not to fix it, because "when you take manifold out the bolts often break and it is pain of the neck to drill them out then".

The part itself is almost $300.00.

What would you do?

If it is a Minor leak leave it for now. But if it is really loud then it needs to be changed.

 

Get a good penetrant and start soaking the bolts now. Shoot some penetrant on it every day for a week or so, that should help prevent them from snapping. tap them a little with a hammer to knock the rust off and help the penetrant along a little.

 

For example... PB Blaster (aerosal spray) or Liquid Wrench (in old-cigarette-lighter-fluid-like can)

Tech-I can hear the noise w/ windows down, I can't hear much w/ windows closed. I can hear more noise when driving next to the wall (divider on the roads) or when I drive next to parked cars- if there is something next to the road that reflects the sound, I hear more noise comparing to driving in the open spaces.

I wonder :
1. how much I should expect to pay for the labor?
2. if the performance/ drivability of the car is affected? ( I am guessing -not)

Probably about 1 to 2 hours.(Labor)

It won't affect the performance unless it gets worse.
