Default Thermostat housing

Hello and thanks for the help,

I could not get the torx bolt out of the thermostat cover, wound up cracking the housing that goes into the block. Can someone give me an idea what I have to remove to take the main housing off of the block.
Thanks in advance

Richard

I believe you will need to remove the power steering pump and Alt.
Then I think you can get to it.

And you will need the following parts:

1. Housing
P/N: 1397909 (Volvo)
$66.50

2. Gasket (FCP Groton has miswritten it as "waterpump housing gasket", where as it is actually the T-stat housing gasket).
P/N: 1397574 (Elwis Royal)
$2.00

And in case you need the upper housing as well:
P/N: 3531478 (Scan-tech)
$20.00

They are at: http://www.fcpgroton.com/volvo850cooling.htm
Compare price & shipping deal with: http://www.eeuroparts.com/home.aspx

I hate those Torx screws because half the time they're guaranteed to strip.

When I finally did get my torx screws out to replace the thermostat I put hex bolts back in to replace the damn tox screws. That is one thing I really hate about these car is the use of torx and in the case of the ABS module, an inverted torx.

How did you fit a hex bolt on the back side?
My 95 855t rear torx bolt is stripped, and now I need to figure out how to remove>>>>?????
I guess I need to pull out the fuel rail to get some room to use a screw extracter...

But it looks to tight to fit a hex bolt on the back side...
