Thermostate Replacement: Recommended Temperature

Thermostate Replacement: Recommended Temperature
It's time to replace the thermostat. Any recommendations or experience using 195º vs 180º? I'm seeing other posts for other cars where people are saying that running below the original temperature is bad because if the oil isn't hot enough, then the engine isn't lubed right and thus wears faster. So, at 125,000 miles, are there more issues with the lower oil temperature at 180º or should am I more prone to overheating using the 195º thermostat? I always thought cooler was better, but the stuff I'm reading about the effectiveness of the oil at lower temps bothers me. Any thoughts or experience on this? Car is 1995 850GLT no turbo.

I have the same car, I have the 90C in there right now, it runs *just above* dead center and by that I mean 1/2 needle width off. The 87C I think was original but I believe Volvo now recommends 90C for our cars via VADIS (?) so I went with that. So far so good. Honestly we're talking 5*F here difference between 87C and 90C it's not going to make a difference.
Not sure where you are getting 180F t-stat from the lowest I've see for our cars is 87C which is 189F. 90C = 194F

My 850 was not warming up fast enought so I decided to replace the thermostat. It was taking around 5 to 7 miles to warm up and when I took the old one out, it had a broken bracket and was not closing all the way.
Here are photo instructions for those that need them: http://www.atthetipwebs.com/technolo...thermostat.htm
