Default Timing Belt Service a DIY job?

I was wondering on what kind of job the Timing belt job is like to do, is it feasable to do it in the driveway? Down time for the car is not an issue. I have yet to recieve my manual so I do not know the procedure as of yet but just looking in the engine bay it looks to be a job in a tight spot, is there a lot of room to work on that side of the engine to do belt, pump, pulleys, tensioner and seals?

As stated in an earlier thread I do have quite the oil leak in my engine, I'm still not sure what seal it is that's gone but i have noticed that there is oil on the cam gears and belt when i pryed back the cover for a peek. So some work in there is going to have to be done and i was planning on doing a timing belt job anyway for reliability issues anyway.

I fount a kit on ebay that consists of, Hepu German OEM Water Pump, Thermostat Gasket Included w/ Pump, OEM Continental Timing Belt, Timing Belt Tensioner, Timing Belt Idler Pulley, Timing Belt Tensioner Pulley, Front Crank Seal, Front Cam Seal, Front Balance Shaft Seal, Rear Cam Seal, Rear Balance Shaft Seal, Rear Crank Seal and Serpentine Belt. This kit will cost me around $400- $450 (canadian) including shipping costs. Would this bea good deal and would it be wise to replace all those items on a high mileage car?

I just did a search for details on Timing belt service and details on procedure but never had any luck, does anyone know if there's a link to a write up on this job?

Thank
-Mike

That sounds like a pretty good price for the parts.
I would start out doing the Cam seals and the idler and tensioner pulleys.
If the water pump is weaping replace it. Unless you want to just replace for piece of mind.

This is the best link I have for timing belt. Sorry not many pics. I can supply better pics of the timing marks.

I need to do a write up myself for the timing belt replacement but just haven't had time to do it yet.

Mike,

Here is another link for timing belt replacement. I used it and it made the job a piece of cake. Just take your time.

Thaks Glen that was another good read!!

Aside from those steps in the timing belt change I'm looking at replacing cam seals and the crank shaft seal, there is an obvious leak in one of those items on my engine.

I wouls assume The crank pulley, crank timing pulley will have to come off and the cam shaft gears will have to come off as well. would there be any other parts to remove to replaace the seals?

Are there any special tools neccessary to do the job?

what is involved in instaling the seals them selvs, do they just slid over the shafts??
thanksl

Technically you should have a tool to hold the cams. But if you mark them and not move them once the pulleys are off you will be fine.
The seals slide over and then you will have to tap them in Carefully.

Yes.
But like I said before very rare to leak.
Clean the engine again and run it with the timing belt cover off and watch closely.

I have seen about 100-150 Cam seals leak to 1 crank.

Well I cleaned the engine and well i got carried away and decided to scrap the intake to check out the breather haha so i didn't run it again to see where oil may be commin from! oh well in time i guess!!

One thing i did notice that o thought was a little wierd, i'll let you guys be the judge..... i think when the timing belt was done last they but the older generation timing belt on.... i'm not sure how much thinner it is but it just don't look right to me... my engine serial# is 169539 which would be the wider belt, and it appears to me this isn't right?

take a look, what ya think??

edit: the belt is to the edge od the gear on the top, not over it

The belts do not cover the entire pulley. They will be thinner than the pulley.
