Thanks to all who have helped with other problems with this car.

I am noticing that one of the front tires is down to the wear bars, but the other is not (actually has pretty good tread.) Both tires have the same mileage, but have not been rotated at all.

What would cause this unequal wear?

One tyre is probably out of alignment; have the alignment checked at a reputable shop. I usually go to the dealer for 4-wheel alignment but for the fronts, 850 uses simple McPherson set-up so any reputable shop should be able to do. It might have gone out of alignment due to a worn out suspension component.I would check forball joint, tie-rod ends for torn rubber boots,play, etc...
