Default Transmission Filter??

All,

Forgive me if this has been asked before (the serch function hates me right now)

Does the automatic transmission for a 95 850 Turbo have a filter that can be changed? I flushed and changed the fluid about 500 miles ago and didn't see one. The reason I ask is that when I did change the fluid it was the color of VERY used motor oil! After flushing the fluid was a semi dark, but clear red. Now checking it again after 500 miles, it looks dark again.

Many thanks,

Glenn

I think there is a filter but it's inside the transmission and generally regarded as not serviceable by the DIYer. Changing the fluid is about all you can do.

Did you flush it or just change it? My understanding is changing it only gets about 50% out. There is a thread by Robert213 that tells a rather easy way to flush the system. Personally I have never changed or flushed my transmissions in any of my Volvo's and have never had a transmission problem. When I check my fluid it always looks clear red. I guess I've just been lucky. The R that I have now has had the transmission fluid CHANGED every 20K using synthetic fluid. I have yet to put 20K on it, but since it's had this done, I will probably continue this procedure.

I drained and reflled mine. You'll get about 3 qts out each time. I did this three or four times I forget. The fluid was bright red when I was done. Is this the best way to do this? No idea...but I feel better with red fluid in there instrad of burnt brown muck.

I did the drain and refill method 4 times. The first time the fluid that came out looked like used diesel motor oil!! Didn't smell burnt, but was really dark. Each time I did the drain and refill the fluid drained out looked a lot better. After I finished, the transmission shifted a LOT smoother. Now THough, the fluid is starting to get dark again after only about 500 miles. I guess I will run it for a couple thousand more miles and do the drain and refill procedure again

Yep, That's the procedure I used. As I said I did the procedure 4 tiomes and the fluid looked much better. Now 500 miles later it is starting to get black colored again. Hope I don't have a problem looming!
