Transmission Questions

As everyone knows in my 96 854 T-5 I almost have no reverse, (It works better when I Flintstone it or someone pushes me) and I dont totally know to much about the Auto transmission deal.
I know a manual works on shift forks and gears, but Does an auto have gears?
Specifically with reverse and going thru the forward gears?
Does the Valve body, solenoids, and torque converter control this all?
Would replacing the entire valve body, and solenoids remedy my problem or is reverse housed somewhere else?
Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

I am no expert but from what I have learned over the past 30 days, auto tranny's have gears, ports that direct fluid, pressure build ups, felt pads that go between the gears, sensors, etc., to help the thing work. Over the years, I was always told that REVERSE is the 1st gear that goes out when a tranny is on it's way out.
I have also read a lot of the Auto Tranny testing and repair manual from the Volvo repair manual. Not sure if that info is on the VADA disk, haven't checked. If you pm me, I can send you the tranny stuff that I have been reading over.
