My 1997 Volvo is giving me problems with the shifter...When I turn the car on and go to shift into gear, the shifter will not move. I have to turn the car off and try again, after several attempts it eventually will go into gear. What do I need to do to correct this problem

 

Did you try putting different pressure on the brake pedal? Did you try wiggleing the key in the ignition? Also try playing with the button on the shifter.

Other than that, there is a shift lock cable that goes from the ignition to the shifter area. That may be out of adjustment or something.

 

Shiftlock override for the time being should solve it.
