I am new to the Volvo world. I have been wrenching on hot rods and jeeps for 25 years. So this small displacement turbo engine scene is really a different thing for me.

I just got a 1996 850R... Love the car!! I am bringing it up to a, if I am correct, a stage "0" tune.

My question is... When I hit the gas, WOT, it goes but does not seem to GO until about 2000 rpm. The car accelerates like crazy, turbo boost and all at highway speed. I have surprised a couple of Porsche's

But off the line it seems to be a bit slow...

Is this normal?

To some degree yes. Have you done a compression test?

 

Yes, there are a few things that people do to reduce turbo lag at low engine speed torque a little. From reverse intercooler piping to NA cams.

 

Yes, I did a dry compression test this morning. 165 to 170 on all 5 cylinders.

 

Yea it's normal. I have the Stage 1 ARD tune and mine lags quite a bit more than my newer GTI. When it comes in it really comes in. Got to make sure it's pointed straight!
