Unhappy Urgent Help Needed !!!!! 1996 volvo 850 R

Went to check my trans fluid level last night and found it wat 2 1/2 quarts low, so went and filled to proper level with trans up to temp and in neutral. Drove back home fine, went out this morning to start the car and found huge puddle of trans fluid under car dirrectly under the transmission mount and everywhere i go it leaves a puddle. Now i can see why i was so low on fluid but it did not leak before? Please help !!!!

What kind of URGENT help are you looking for? Can you see where it is leaking from? If it's near the front, maybe your dip stick tube is leaking where it goes into the tranny. Why did you check the level? Are you sure you checked and serviced it right? There is nothing in the manual stating that it should be in neutral when checking or filling it.

I just could not afford for my ride to go down. I was always told to check the fluid level in the transmission with the car running and in neutral i just thought the same would apply to the 850R. The leak looks like it is coming from above the lower transmission mount and around the gold colored plate in front of the transmission. I checked the level because I had been hearing some noise from the trans while in drive gears, especially while at stop lights etc. Thanks in advance !!

Well, you should look in the manual and check it the way they explain.

Also, There are few places it can be leaking from. You will have to do your best to look it over and find where it is leaking from. Look at the dip stick tube, that's an easy fix. Other than that you will need a mechanic to fix it. I'm having one put in this week and there are 3 main seals that I had to get. Two shaft seals and main pump seal. If the main pump seal is bad the tranny may have to be lowered to replace the seal.

My 850 did not come with a owners manual. What is the proper procedure for checking the automatic transmission fluid ?

The general rule for auto transmission's is to bring them up to operating temperature and check while in park.

If you go to the General Volvo Chat section, then click the New Volvo Owner sticky, there should be a link there to the Volvo site that has all of the owners manuals there. The main site is Volvo Car Corporation ? Volvo Cars Country Selector and you have to click through to owners information. The link to the manuals is in that sticky.
