Volvo 850 2.3 turbo Estate - minor problems
Hi everyone, I bought my Volvo only in August, this year.
My volvo, comparing to its age is pretty good, with millage of only almos 52000 miles.
But there are some problems i don't know what to blame on:
1. Engine starts with no problem, but, than when i have to move the gear from "P" position, i have to press the shift button - it happens almost every time with some exceptions - at the same time the ABS light is off and headlights are working also;
2. Every time after car is started and when making first few meters, there is sound of iron scratch coming from the front wheels (i guess from the left – maybe somewhere on the first or second speed) - it only happens after when engine is started – it does not repeat even I stop the car, but do not turn off the engine;
3. Before buying my volvo, i was visiting the volvo forums and everyone was saying that 850 has smooth driving with almost no noise inside the car - but, as i got my volvo, there is constant noise of the road, as if rolling with wodden wheels )) (i hope you will understand me)

RE: Volvo 850 2.3 turbo Estate - minor problems
Welcome to the Forum. Nice looking car.
The rumble you are hearing each time you are starting out is from the Anti Lock Brake System.
It does a self-test each time the car first starts moving from start-up. The noise is normal.
A Volvo 855 is a "Sport Wagon". So the suspension is reasonably stiff. Good road feel
is needed when putting BMW's in their place.

Thank you guys.
Trektech, it feels really great when putting BMWs in their place especially, when they think that their sporty looking coupes can do such a giant as my volvo )) it really disappoints them
Ozark, what pressure do you have in your tires? I think i am going to change mine to 55s and also in the city driving mine consumes approx. 17.4 MPGs, is it reasonable?
And what about the "P" position release when engine is on?
sorry for such a stupid questions, but in my country there is no certified volvo center i could consult with, so you are the only guys i can share my experience

Thanks a lot i hope before i will fix the shift locker, nothing serious will happen.
Does your car has the rumble that i mentioned when starting up. As "trektech" told me it is normal, as Anti Lock Brake System
does a self-test each time the car first starts moving from start-up
As for the traffic in my city, it is very heavy and plus there are lot of hills and steeps, so i guess this is the reason.
While on the highways, (also with lot of hills and mountains ) at low speed it consumes 30-31 mpg and with some speeding 24-25 mpg.
Thank you again my friend,
I really appreciate your help
David

RE: Volvo 850 2.3 turbo Estate - minor problems
Here is my take on your problems:
1.) You need thishttp://www.ipdusa.com/Volvo-850/Transmission-&-Drive-Train/Automatic-Shift-Lock-Microswitch/p-72-152-3108/
That is the ShiftLock Microswitch. Reasonably inexpensive and easy to do.
2.) Wheel scraping and vibrations can be from a multitude of things. Start with easy stuff. Take your car and have the wheels inspected for bends or cracks, tires inspected for broken belts or things of that nature. Have the wheels rebalanced. Wheels CAN be come imbalanced and need an adjustment like everything else. Its quite possible that, if you have sticky weights, that one came off somewhere.
Next move to brakes. Maybe you have a warped rotor or stuck caliper
Then, check suspension. You might have blowing socks or struts and especially blown mounts.
Or some weird combination of things.
You don't necessarily have to go to a Volvo dealer for things as simple as tires, brakes, and suspension.
I certainly don't.
Hope that helps a bit!

RE: Volvo 850 2.3 turbo Estate - minor problems
Do anyone know where can i get online Volvo 850 Repair Manual for free, or something like that
http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/dow.../Volvo_850.zip
I'm not sure what year your car is. The manual is for a 1995 model but things are very similar from year to year. From 1996 and on the diagnostics are OBD-II which requires a scanner to get the codes.

Great, thanks.
I can't get my eyes off the manual already found some interesting points
thanks VJZ, i will pay a visit to master. actually, the reason of the "rumble" was not bad balancing or the wheels, i checked it couple of times.
For this weekend i have something to read

Thanks JPN
I assume you are from Japan. The reason of asking you is that, my Volvo is imported from Japan, although it is US make.
I have the Maintenance Record, but it is all in Japanese , I tried to find in my country someone who not only knows Japanese, but can understand all the tech meanings
If it is not a problem for you, can I ask you to have a look on my Maintenance Record; I could scan and send it to you. Thank you

You would have a hell of a time finding one with such qualifications. In Japan, they say there are many Japanese people who can communicate in English. Bull sxxt, even at the airline I work for (the one just merged, and it is a U.S carrier) there are only 3-4 out of some 60+ technicians who are fluent in English. All the rest either speaks EngRish or can hardly write without spelling/grammatical mistakes. Sadly, though, they do not want to admit it. I paid my share & did my homework to learn English and am still in the learning process.
