Default Volvo 850 Inner Tie Rod Tool Size

What size tool is needed to remove a TRW inner tie rod? I need to know what tool to buy. I don't have a pipe wrench so I need to buy a tool of some sort at the same time I buy everything else.

I am looking at the Lisle 45750 tool kit which includes 6 SAE crowfoot inserts but do any of the supplied inserts fit? See below. I also looked at some of the hardened super thin wrenches. The super thins might be OK if you can put a cheater over them. They seem short. I really don't know if its a waste or not which the reason I defer to the experts here on the forum. I see alot of write ups on how to replace the inners but hardly any mention of the tool size being used except there seems to be alot of pipe wrenches being used to remove.

45670 33.6mm
45820 1 7/16"
45830 1 5/16"
45840 1 1/4"
45700 1 3/16"
1 1/2"

I looked in Haynes and there is no mention at all on inner tie rod removal and the volvo service manual that is available online describes the procedure to remove but no tool sizes. Only torque values for installation. Help me out guys.

In a nutshell. Tool recommendation and size.

Thanks in advance

Jack

You could also try one of the loaner kits from Autozone, Oreilly ...

I got my answer from Lisle engineering support. I got a quick response on Monday and was told I need a 1-1/4" for TRW inner tie rods. I measured the flats to be 1.260-1.262. I found a used tool and it came with 1-1/4" crowfoot. The local parts houses either didn't loan tools or they were either already rented, loaned, etc. Thanks for the help. The video was great and will be helpful when I do the repair. I wound up purchasing a pipe wrench as well, I figured if I was going buy tools I might as well buy all that I might need. Still going to be cheaper than paying the labor to a shop for a relatively simple project.

Thanks
jk

No one could tell me which rack is on our S70. Tried to install TRW parts, no go. It's SMI. Had to order new parts.

YEAH. Except they don't fit. They don't even have the 1 and 1/4 adapter needed for an 850.

I needed a metric tie rod adapter tool for my 2000 v70xc with the SMI rack.

The adapter size for the removal tool that fit my steering rod/ inner tie rod was 33.6mm. Hope that helps someone out there According to the genuine volvo parts catalog, that would be the same size on any s70 or v70 with an SMI rack, marked with a 5 under the vin label on the car.

Also, according to the volvo parts catalogue, all 850s have TRW check page 91: http://www.proparts.se/dokument/bibl...alog_part2.pdf
