I can't say for sure on a Volvo specifically as I haven't tried mine yet, but any other car I can think of it's because your ignition tumbler is excessively worn.

Finally went out and tried mine. Key shouldn't come out. It's a sign yours is well worn and should be replaced to prevent a problem down the road.

The springs that hold the tumblers in place are worn or busted. The plug with the key slot has to be replaced. Had same thing happen on my truck. Replacement is simple. New ignition switch keyed for your car is required. Chilton 8-29, Haynes 12-4.

It may never totally fail. Don't worry about it unless it does. It may last a month it may last 8 years.

Default 850 Ignition Switch

FYI. Volvo Ignition Key Switch - Auto Parts Warehouse= You might spray with Liquid Graphit while it is parked & just run the key in & out multiple times to free the pins. Most other treatments contain water, not recommended. I have used in many locks the last 20 yrs. Only product recommended by most locksmiths. Do not use WD40. Excellent product for alot of uses but not locks.

My guess would be that 1/2 of these cars have the same problem but just don't know it because we haven't tried to pull the key out. I drove my 850 sedan for over a year before I realized that I didn't have to push the button on the shifter handle to move the shifter lever.
