Default Volvo 850 problems

Hello everyone,
So i Just bought a 1996 volvo 850 glt 2.4L with a whole lot of problems (139k)... Its my first car and I don't know much. So the computer had been restarted earlier and Im going to try to turn it back on with a drive cycle. How do I know when its back on?
I ran it by a mechanic and they told me to get rid of it because it has 10 codes stored in the computer related to P1308. I ran it by Deq and it failed, diagnostic trouble codes are P1308, P0450, P0172. I think it would be fun to work on it but IDK if it will ever pass DEQ.
Other problems are radiator hoses, accessary belt cracked, driver side torn boot, and abs service light. She runs nice though, shifts smooth and all the electronics work.. any advice on how to make it pass DEQ for cheap would be great. Thanks

What mechanic would tell you to get rid of a car because of codes? Not sure how they could say there were 10 codes related to P1308? The 1308 refers to an accelerometer sensor signal level.

See http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/for...ic.php?t=16423 for a good discussion on how somebody replaced a $40 part to clear the code.

Next is the P0450 and P0172 codes. The 0450 points to the evap system and the 0172 is a mixture compensation problem. To me, these to point to a vacuum line/hose problem - I'd start by checking the hoses/connections all the way back by the evap cannister, then complete an inspection under the hood or have your "mechanic" do a smoke test. Since the car is new to you, you should probably start with a full "stage 0" tune - plugs, wires, cap, rotor (coil should be ok since you don't have any misfire codes).

On your ABS light - does it go on intermittantly? (lol my 850Ts been doing that for years). There you may need to check your ABS sensors/connectors at the wheels. Also while you are there, check the brake hoses for cracks etc. These cars do develop cracks in the ABS computer board but that mostly shows with a blinking tracs light and ABS light lit or speedo failure.

SO start by reading up on the 1308 code for 850s then check the vacuum lines to the evap. You may also want to get your own code reader as you sort through to clear and view codes. You may also want to look around for a Volvo experienced mechanic in your area.

Well the abs light is always on. The service light went off when I put more brake fluid in. Im not sure if I need to bleed the brakes when I add more fluid? All the hoses and wires need to be replaced for sure. And about the computer when do I know that its back on? Thanks for the help.

You can do the math yourself. I do my own labor

Radiator hoses

Belt

Driver side half shaft

ABS light, rebuild ABS module

P1308 is related to ignition, so cap, rotor, wires, and plugs

P0450, P0172 are probably related to vacuum leak, so replace all rubber vacuum hoses, $20 maybe
