Tech's wright up is superb!
To answer you questions though,
-Yes a M56L from a '93 N/A will work. That is what I currently have in my 854R
-Get the R clutch kit.
-Remove your Transmission ECU
-You don't have to do anything to your ECU but you will get a code saying something to the effect of your ECU not receiving a signal form your transmission ECU.
But IIRC there were 850 Turbos that came stock with as a manual right? If so, swap your ECU with an ECU out of a manual version. That would solve all your problems.

Now didn't the US get 850 Turbos in a manual from the factory??? I thought we did. If so a manual ECU out of a manual turbo would solve any issues...

Only problem with a euro tune is the car would no longer being OBD II compatible. Not good if he's in an area with yearly inspections. Not sure about the Canadian car's being OBD II ready though...

Yes it will. When IPD or anyone tunes your ecu they use the euro or candian t5m base map and then tune that to what you want. If you can't find a stock manual ecu, get you're flashed. But you still lose the obdII, since they use the euro or canadian base map. The only company that has figured out how to keep the OBDII with a manual tune is turbo tuner, which is around 900-1000, but you do the tuning yourself, so unless you know a little more about your car, I wouldn't recommend that.
