Default What to do with my emergency brake?

Hi guys, hadn't post anything in a while, but here's my question. What to do with my emergency brakes? The story to this strarted 2 yrs. ago when I first got my car. When I first got it, it worked fine till after I wash the car. It was sitting for 2 days after the wash and when I tried to back up it was stuck, causing the back end to jack up because of the delta link design. Anyway, when it was freed it would make this crunching sound especially when parked in an angle from the emergency brakes when in use. Later 7 months later my dad was driving it with the e brakes on for 30 min. at about 70 mph. Before this drive, we were in the parking lot and it make a crack sound before coming to a stop before we hit the road. Fast forward 4 months my dad left it on again! After 2 weeks later I wash the car again and left it a few days before I drove it again and what do you know, it locked up again. Now every time I try to use it it would make a crunching sound and the e brakes doesn't do anything any much unless you really pull it up. My parents said just to adjust the e cable or pads, but I thing there's internal damage done.

Thanks again,
MC92

P.S. Does anyone know the difference between post and tread?

My guess is that firstly your cable is stuck and that is causing it not to engage and dis engage properly...socondly, the e-brake shoes might have taken the toll. So, If you want it functional, I would replace shoes and cable at one go.

Sounds like the parking brake lining has unbonded from the shoes and will need replaced. The parking brake shoes are internal on the drum part of the rotor and are not associated with the actual disc brakes.

Would you consider this job medium or hard? Cost in parts or labor? I would like to save some money on if possible and if it's not to difficult where can I get the instuctions to do this as I had never done anything involving brakes before.

Then pay someone. Brakes are nothing to experiment with.

+1 to Johnny, or work with someone who has dealt with fixing the brakes before. The parking brake requires adjustment both at the lever and the star-adjuster at the shoes.

This may be a good time to consider replacing the rotors & pads if they do not have much life left in them.

Make sure to use OEM parts only. See if a possible shop accepts parts from customers. The dealers would use the OEM parts but non-dealers may use non-OEM parts that are inferior in quality.

The other thing to do is not let your Dad drive the car anymore.

Don't worry. My dad is actually afraid to drive my car, b/c I'm a perfectionist. I like to keep my car clean and neat, which means no food or drinks, always make sure the seat belts are reel back and not tangled, drive the car only during nice weather outside, and other many, many regulations. Also everytime he drives it, bad things happen to the car it seems. Wonder why?
