Default what kind of turbo on stock 850??

hey guys, im looking for help relating to my dads 1996 850 turbo. It has right at 200,000 and the turbo just let go. What kind of turbo is mounted on this motor. Of course its the 5 cylinder and its an automatic if that matters. Instead of crawling up under the car and getting junk all over me i thought it just might be easier if i post the question here. He travels alot with it and found a guy that had a few good turbos but was told to get the # off the turbo. Me nor myhim looked from above andcouldnt see anything due to 200,000 on the car and we are not sure exactly where this id tag is anyway. Any help would be great

thanks
adam

I believe you have a 13g straight outlet turbo.

^Are you positive? Because I saw something on VolvoSpeed where the guy said it was a 15g.

I'm looking for the thread right now..

15G is an HPT turbo. High pressure. He says he as an 850 Turbo. Seems to me that the "TURBO" model was an LPT not an HPT. T5R, R were HPT models.

Could be a 15G, but I wont say for sure yet. And I said I believe I didn't say I knew for sure it was a 13G.

^Don't get me wrong. I'm not calling you out or anything. I'm just trying to figure it out, because I don't know myself.

I apologize if it sounded like I was going after you or whatever.

Does the size of the turbos between the LPT and HPT differ? According to my understanding, they differed by an ECU chip which gives you extra boost for 30 seconds..

^Interesting. I never knew that...

I just thought one boosted higher than the other and that was it...

Just curious, but why would they put different turbos on? Wouldn't it need different piping and thus Volvo's costs would be higher?

This might help you.

http://www.quickbrickmotorsports.com...lange_list.htm

As you can see some cars use the same turbo. However a different outlet flange is used. Example take a 16T turbo. You can get an Angled outlet 16T and a Straight outlet 16T. Another example take a 15G. You can get a Conical outlet 15G and a Straight outlet 15G.

"15G - B5234T 225hk/B5234T5 240hk 1994-1995, The old conic outlet
15G - B5234T 225hk/B5234T5 240hk 1996, straight outlet form turbine.

16T - B5234T4 250hp kom 1996 i 850R man, straight outlet from turbine
16T - B5234T3 240hp 1997-1998 finns i S/V/C70 T5, straight oulet from turbine.
16T - B5234T3 240hp 1999-2000 finns i S/V/C70 T5, angled outlet from turbine.
16T - B5234T3 250hp 2001- alla S60/V70N T5, angled outlet from turbine.

18T - B5234T4 250hp 1997-1998 only S/V70R man FWD/AWD, 275/60 wastegate and straight outletform turbine.
18T - B5234RT 250hp 1999 only V70R AWD, 4-vxl aut, 300/70 wastegate and angled outlet form turbine.

Great link. Thanks for the find.
Then according to your chart......Since he has a '96, he has either a 15g.

But I guess I was partially correct. Look as though it was '97 where they used two different turbos (the 13g and 15g). Before that, it was all 15gs...

Edit: Stripey, check out this link. I think it will be helpful.

Actually 97 was the first year for the low pressure turbo in the 850 GLT model. Before that the GLT was not turbocharged. In 94 the turbo model was just named 850 Turbo, in 95 same name but added the 850 T5R which just used a different computer chip but the same turbo, in 96 the Turbo became the T5 and the T5R became just the R, 97 was same as 96 but added the LPT for the GLT. I would never own a model that didn't have at least the LPT.
