What is a welch plug/freeze plug?
Hello Everyone,
I'm Chris from the south of Australia, just outside Adelaide and I recently registered here to gain knowledge about my newly purchased 1995 Volvo 850 SE, 2.5L 5-cyl 10 valve. I hope one day that I can also help someone else out. I was 21 as of July 2013, my old man is a cockney (Stratford) and European cars is just about all I've grown up with. I recently retired my 1991 Saab 9000 turbo (what a machine!!).
Anyway, to explain the title, I have had nothing but problem finding with my new purchase: it has 235 thousand kilometers (146 thou miles).
It is currently at the mechanic and he has told me the welch plug (freeze plug) needs replacing due to leaking. (Currently in the process of changing belts. I also just replaced the timing belt pulleys...I tell ya, parts pricing here is ridiculous!)
What is a welch plug/freeze plug? And where does it go? What needs to happen to change it?
Also, how do I know if my water pump needs replacing?
Thankyou in advance for your help.
Chris

plug
freeze plugs are set into the block of the engine....if for some reason the water in the cooling system freezes (cold country) the plugs will ease out of the block relieving the pressure of the expanding water becoming ice....saving the block of the engine.
sometimes the freeze plugs rust out and need to be replaced, this could be evidenced by loss of coolant.
