Woohoo! New 850 owner but of course, there's issues.........
Hello, I've been reading for a while, now it's time to post and tap some knowledge
So I bought a 1995 850 turbo wagon. About 180,000 miles. Odometer is broken
Of course there are issues.
It had a new pcv valve, head gasket and timing belt along with a valve job about 3 years, 40,000 miles ago.
1. I got a P0400 error code, relating to the EGR valve. I'm going to try and clean that out this weekend.
Could this be causing the smell of burning fumes/oil in the cabin and under the hood?
2. This is strange, I start the car and the dash and ancillary controls (heating a/c) etc turn on, but after about 20 seconds the lights fade out and I'm left driving with zero lights on the dash or controls. What on earth would cause them to turn on then fade out?
3. Going into reverse causes a clunk, the fluid has just been replaced. I've heard an IPD motor mount can ease the clunking? Is this true or do I need to do something else?
4. After being driven, I parked and noticed when the heater is on there is a pulley at the bottom towards the front of the car that seems to cycle on and off with a bit of a clunk. I think that pulley could be something to do with the a/c??
Is this normal or do I need to do some maintenance
I know there's some experts in here, but I'm always open to listening to different theories and then researching them, so thanks in advance guys.

1. EGR valve likely needs to be cleaned. It's best to remove the intake and clean out the holes for the EGR in the intake as well. They should have done that when they did the PCV but what the heck, I don't think I did the 1st time. This should not cause burnt oil smell. Something is likely leaking on to the exhaust.
2. The interior light dimmer. Pull the switch under it then reach behind it and push it out and replace it.
3. The IPD or any transmission mount should help with that. My sedan was doing it with a newer mount and the fluid change helped. I did the 3 drain and refill method. I also shift to park before going to reverse. Seems to help.
4. That is your AC compressor kicking off an on. If you don't need the AC just turn the AC off on the dash until you need it. You likely have one of two problems. One: the freon needs to be serviced. These systems do leak, especially the AC evaporator. Two: the compressor clutch could be worn and needs to be shimmed.
Have fun!

Excellent, thanks for the reply.
One other thing o forgot to mention, yesterday the roads were pretty greasy so i thought id try winter mode for the transmission. There was no difference to the economy mode and no sort of notification to say it was in winter mode. Is something wrong? Could that switch be bad too? Surely there should be something that indicatesits in winter mode other than me just knowing i pushed the button?
Thanks again

There is a method to getting into the W mode. Check this link and go down to 4:8

Mine wont go into winter mode unless im at a complete stop..
all winter mode does is start you off in 3rd gear instead of first so you dont have any wheel spin..
If the arrow isnt coming on make sure the bulb isnt blown, like rspi said when you press the winter mode button the lights for E or S should go out even if you dont have the arrow on the dash..
Try this when stopped put the car in "L" the arrow should light up... if not your bulb is most likely blown.
