Default VVT solenoids

Hi Guys. My wife's 2009 C30 T5 has the check engine on. We brought it to the dealer and they said it needs both VVT solenoids replaced. They wanted to charge us over $1000 to do the job. After looking around online it seemed like an easy enough fix, so I ordered OE replacement parts. Last Sunday I went about tackling the job. Everything was going along as expected until it was time to remove the old solenoids. I used penetrating oil to loosen them up, which it did, but when I went to pull them out the solenoids came out, but what I can best describe as the sleeve with the relief holes in it remained in the bore hole in the cam cover. I tried to pull out the sleeves with a pick tool and even tried using 90 degree allen wrench. The sleeve will rotate within the bore but will not budge up at all.
My question is, does anyone on here have any experience with this job? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
