Buying c70
Hi, I'm looking at buying a c70 t5 gt convertible (2002 version).
Having looked at one and later found it to be registered as a 2.0 turbo!
I was wondering: Is there any easy way to check once your looking at the car that it is a t5 it was certainly quite fast but I've nothing to compare it to.
Any other buying advice would be appreciated.
Sorry if this has been covered before
Cheers
Ben

Hi Ben,
This may have been covered before, but I will help you out and get you started.
The C70 for 2002 comes in 2 versions, one with a 2.4 LPT (low pressure turbo), which is the most common, and another version with a 2.3 HPT (high pressure turbo). Even though the 2.3 L engine is smaller, the turbo boost is at a higher level making the engine quicker. The performance on the HPT version is around 7.8, 0-60 MPH, which is pretty quick. The engine has about 242 HP, but that figure seems to vary. Needless to say, the car is fast. You will be able to keep up with just about anything on the road.
The 2.3 also has sodium filled valves and a lower compression ratio. I have also read that the piston liners are different... The 2.3 has different cylinder liners in order that they can withstand the higher combustion pressure.
Of course, the 2.4 LPT is also fast, just not as fast as the 2.3.
BASE ENGINE SIZE 2.3 L CAM TYPE Double overhead cam (DOHC)
CYLINDERS Inline 5 VALVES 20
TORQUE 244 ft-lbs. @ 2400 rpm HORSEPOWER 236 hp @ 5400 rpm
BASE ENGINE SIZE 2.4 L CAM TYPE Double overhead cam (DOHC)
CYLINDERS Inline 5 VALVES 20
TORQUE 210 ft-lbs. @ 1800 rpm HORSEPOWER 197 hp @ 5700 rpm
You will be able to find most of the common problems associated with the car on other posts. In my research, the best years for the soft top are 2002-2004 - Volvo made some changes in 2002 that eliminated many of the previous troubles.
These cars are not for everyone, but if you want a convertible, and live in the right climate, you may be in for a pleasant surprise. I really love mine; you get a sense of freedom that you just don't get that much any more. Go for post 2002.

the engine code should be a two digit number in the VIN (in position 6-7 if you see "41" its a 2.0L) - plus if you look under the hood you should see a sticker with the 5/6 character code ie B5234T is a 5 cyl turbo). There may be a plate on the firewall or the VIN is on a door sticker too - just not sure about the 2002 C70s....
