Default Not Your Normal AC Question

So my AC Blows Really Really Cold with the top up sometimes for the whole trip. Recently it has been cutting off quite often when driving meaning it will blow really cold then all of a sudden blow warm. I turn off the AC and wait a few seconds turn it back on and its really really cold again. Here is the weird part. If I drive with the Top down and the AC running it says cold the entire time? Any ideas?

The most common thing that causes the "ac stops blowing cold then after off for a while blows cold again, worse on hot days" is the worn clutch problem - measure your clutch gap. I trust you have read those posts about reshimming the clutch and are aware of the proper procedure - don't do the bread clip thing, there's no way plastic bits can last - but some people claim it's a good way to solve it.

Strange indeed, but I would go with the clutch gap fix first, that will probably solve the issue.

A few things to check out: 1) compressor clutch gap (common problem on older Volvos) 2) system charge level (including a possible over charge if the AC has been recently serviced) 3) evaporator icing up due to clogged drains (check for wetness in footwells, any musty smells?) Do you ever see flashing AC/REC lights or a service message suggesting a fault code has been set? I'm wondering if an air temp sensor may be wonky...

My 13' C70 is doing the same thing. Mechanic wants to replace the compressor. Sounds like more likely clutch. Did you ever get it figured out?

If the clutch gap has worn the electromagnet will fail at closing the clutch after everything gets hot and expands. If your clutch gap is too large - you might find a different shop to attempt to set the gap correctly. There were many times/many compressors (in my shop) where even if all the adjusting shims were removed the gap was still too large - And a new compressor comes with a new pre adjusted clutch. Perhaps your shop has tried adjusting clutches previously and was not successful due to a very worn clutch - ending with a dissatisfied customer.
