Default Overheating!

The red light indicating low coolant level went off couple of times last week, I topped off the coolant. Today, the red light went off, stayed on and the engine overheated. The temp guage never went above the middle though! I also noticed that the expansion cap does not close properly, it kind of turns fine to start with but the last couple of turns, it does not turn straight. Is the cap the problem? The thermostat? Why doesn't the gauge go above the middle to the red lines if the car is overheated? The car runs fine and no white smoke from the pipe so I don't think it's the gasket...

Thanks for any advice
Alex

Check the fuse visually or with an ohm meter. You can swap the relays to C if problem changes. Make sure each has same number. Check thermostat with meat thermometer & pan of boiling water. Open starts @ 87-90 C, fully open 102-105 C.

What codes are available? Check coolant temp sensor also. Check water pump for leak @ weep hole.
