Default P2187

So I had to idle outside of a vet appointment for a little over an hour and my Check Engine Light came on. Autozone code read said P2187 which is Intercooler hose. My question is would the idling with the ac on in high temps cause something like this or could this be a faulty code. My engine coolant temp never budged above midway so I figured it would be OK. Thanks everyone.

p2187 is a lean mixture at idle code - did you erase it and see how long it takes to come bad? I would try that first.

My independent is saying that there's also a throttle body code and an ac fan sensor code. I'm guessing that the autozone info about the intercooler was wrong?

Autozone parts salesman diagnosis is a guess - he's "trained" to sell parts not fix cars. But sure an intercooler hose air leak will make the car lean, so will 100 other things. (that code is for lean at idle, if an intercooler hose leaked it would leak more under boost than at idle - so it's not a intercooler hose).

What year is your c70? Early car (99-05) with the Magnetti Marelli (sp) known to fail throttle unit? I would expect a throttle code from that unless it's been replaced recently. Have your guy clear all the codes and see what comes back first - then follow the leads for the first to return.

It's a 2011 after the refresh. I'll ask him to clear the codes. THanks for the info.

Autozone will "rent" you the OBD2 reader for free (at least here in CT and NY they do). Easy enough to do on your own - stop by the store to borrow, you'll find the diagnostic port under the drivers side dash - looks like an old school printer port. plug in the reader, turn the key to position 2 (lights on the dash are on). Follow the menu to scan all codes. write down what you find, clear the codes via the menu. As hoonk noted, now you can wait to see if or what codes return. You can also buy a budget reader for about $25-30 at Harbor Freight which will work fine for simple check engine light scans.

Thank you. They diagnosed the upstream oxygen sensor. Since I've already got it at the mechanic, I will just have them replace it. Will definitely buy a sensor for next time.

I'm usually suspicious of blaming the front O2 sensor for a lean idle. Curious what other tests were done. Did they also check for intake air leaks (vaccuum lines, PCV oil separator, intake air tubing cracks or looseness may require a smoke test to find the leak)? Does your car have a rougher than normal idle? I guess after they replace the sensor, it will either be fixed or not :-(

Post up how this plays out as its as resolving a P2187 is a good topic and a fairly common concern.

Looks like the fix worked at least for now.
