Default Tire Noise with summer tires

I have a year-old 2008 C70 with the summer tire option and the Mirzam wheels. The tires are Pirelli P-Zero Rosso's P 235/40 R18 91Y.

The tires were very quiet for the first 10,000 miles of use. I am now at 12,000 and the tires sound like the all-terrain tires on my pickup truck.

My dealer had the car for two days, really didn't find anything, but did balance and rotate the tires, plus align the front end, with no effect.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? Did it have a solution?

Are the tires feathered?

Thanks for your reply.

I am not sure what you mean by "feathered."

The tires appear, after 12,000 miles, to have very little wear and no sign of uneven wear. There are some of the small mold "hairs" at the end of the tread, but they have been there since the car was new. The tire noise only showed up in the last 2,000 miles.

I appreciate your interest!

Doug

Take your hand and rub the tire forward and backwords. See what it feels like. If the treads seem higher going one way more than the other way they might be feathered causing the noise.

Almost like taking a feather on an arrow. Sliding one way feels smooth going the other way it is rough.

Thanks for the clarification.

However, no joy. The tires are smooth and even in both directions.

I'm open to any other ideas.

Thanks again.

Maybe a tire is out of round.
Thats about all I can come up with without seeing it.

I have 1 2008 Volvo c70 and had the same tire noise with Pirelli's. I got Volvo to change them to Goodyears and they picked up half the tab. However, after 10k miles on the Goodyears the noise is back worse than ever. Something is definitely wrong with the summer tire package on the c70.
I won't buy another one.

I had the same problem with Pirelli tyres, but put up with it until they needed replacing. I now have Michelin Pilot Sport tyres, which are pricey, but also very quiet.

I have a 2007 C70 with exactly the same Pirelli Rosso tires you have and just got my tires replaced after 24000 km ( which is 14400 miles). With your 12000 miles, I think your Rosso tires are close to the end of life already. I checked a number of forums, apparently, these tires only last for about 10000 to 15000 miles. Many people have had got these excessive noise after 10,000 miles. I got lucky and didn't get too much noise, however, it became very slippery on wet pavement when the treads were slowly disappearing.

Perhaps, time to look for new tires. Originally, I was thinking about replacing with the stock tires. However, after reading many postings and reviews, I decided to go with the Pirelli PZero Nero which I was told that these tires will last longer but still relatively performance focused. People told me that Pirelli is not necessary the best but I didn't feel like moving out of Pirelli, so hence I downgraded to Nero to get more out of my tires.

I too am having this feathering problem on my 2008 c70. Had the Pirelli tires as factory. I had the dealer replace them at half price when the car had 17000 miles. They replaced them with Goodyears. Now at 35000 miles, the problem has returned. They did an alignment at 17K and at 35K. I've religiously rotated them and keep the air pressure at spec. Is anyone else experiencing this or is it a design flaw in the c70?

Wondering if the Michelins held up or eventually developed the noise.
