Default Volvo C70 Heater core instructions

HI guys,

We recently troubleshooted the issue I had with the coolant smell coming through my vents everytime I tried to put the heat on.

I have since purchased a heater core and need instructions on how to put it in. Ive read up on some basic instructions but I need something a little more detailed as im an amateur. Im going to get help from a friend who is pretty clued up but still it would come in handy. Ive taken it to an auto mechanic and they have said that the whole dash needs to come out and that its a big job but I seem to have heard otherwise and dont know where to start or who to believe.

I really need this installed this week as we are coming into winter and the only thing demisting my window is my air con and its already cold enough, haha.

Your help would be greatly appreciated as usual

Pete

Chilton's has you removing the dash board and steering wheel. Bear in mind the contact reel in the steering wheel has to be locked or else you are in trouble. Of course disconnect the battery as the SRS could 'surprise' you. Now with that stated, I'll bet TECH has a short cut that he may well comment on that will save you from removing the dash.

OK the first code means the in cabin temp sensor is bad. There is a little grate next to the switches on the right side of the steering wheel. The fan/sensor is behind there. Sometimes you can blow compressed air in there and it will work for a little while.

The second code usually means the blower motor and resistor is bad.

Hi Tech, is this the one your talking about which i should blow the compressed air into ? and about that motor is that hard to replace ?

(EDIT) ok just went onto the IPD site and found these blower motors attached. one is double the price of the other. does the resistor come with it or is it a seperate part ?

The Behr is OEM. The ressitor is seperate.

Yes the pic is correct. After you blow it out see if the fan starts running. If it does then it might work for a little while.

ok well I managed to pull the cover off that little hole and clean it out of dust but the fan didnt start moving. Looks dead ! what could that mean ?

Also I did the heater core all by myself which im very pleased about.....ive never undertaken anything like this before and well after about 4 hours I managed to get things working. I topped up my cooland and left the cap open and its bubbled and overflowed etc and then it settled and I was able to put the cap on and i kept it like that for about 10 minutes while watching the temp gauge and also the reservoir incase it started to bubble but all was good and on the way to work this morning I had no hicups.

when the heating is on the area right near the fan belts squeeks ? is this something I should be concerned about ?

Also one last thing, the heating doesnt appear to work 100%, the middle vents shoot out cold air and the side warm and when its on demist its warm but I feel it could be warmer as its on the highest setting. Its like its not working at 100% but the fan seems to be going ok.

I take it the smell of coolant will eventually go away....yuck My hands still smell of it after 2 showers, haha

coolant did get on the belt yes but the squeeking noise starts when the heating comes on. i ran some water over where all the coolant had spilt.

The fan tells the climate module the cabin temp.

Do you have another roll **** by the center vents one like what you roll to turn the vents off? If so roll that the opposite way and see if it changes.

Serp. belts usually do not make any noise unless it is wet from something.

Maybe it is not all gone yet(cool from old leak)

Ahha, i do have a roll **** and it does change when i move it. down keeps it coming warm and up changes to cool ?

ok so that squeeking noise is perhaps a pulley or something.....mght have it checked out and ill see how I go with the coolant,....its making me pretty sick breathing it in, surely cant be to good for you.

ok so is the fan that tells the climate module the cabin temp expensive to replace and is it difficult to do ?

It is a little bit of a pain to get to but pull the radio and the climate module and you can reach in and get it out. Im not sure on the price though.

One way on the **** keeps fresh air coming in no matter what. That's why it changes the temp of the air.
