Volvo C70 timing belt and 90k maint question
Hi all,I bought my C70 used at 88k and I notice the last dealer service was done around 83k miles. There was no details but a stamp from a Volvo dealership in San Antonio with exact miles was in the service booklet. Before I call them up to see what was done to it, I was wondering if anyone know when the timing belt was supposed to be changed on C70 2.3L? I know Audi A4s are typically at 70k miles. Also, is there a way for quick visual inspection to see if the timing belt is somewhat new or not?
I am going to take the car in at 90k service to dealership soon. The Volvo booklet was a little confusing but besides oil/filter change, what is needed at 90k and how much do you guys normally pay at dealership? Is going to Sythetic at 90k recommended? Brand? TIA

i just talked to someone at the volvo store here and they informed me that the timing belt job is the biggest PITA! you have DOHC and variable valve timing to deal with and the pulleies need to be changes out as well. and that all requires special tools to do it right.

You do not change any pullys. Replace the belt and the accessory belt. IPD has the only "tool" you will need which is a device to lock the cams so they do not turn and change the timing while you change the belt. I believe IPD also has a video that goes along with their kit. The dealer is quite costly to the tune of $550.00 as contrasted to IPD's price of appx. $100.00.
You need to flush your brake fluid, trans fluid, and coolant. Do not neglect the fuel filter which needs periodic replacement.

i figured that, the guy i spoke to was trying to scare me out of doing the job myself i bet. all i need is to be armed with the knowledge that i can find in a manual or something and i'm good.

The 1998 cars are 70K for the timing belt.
The 1999 care and newer Volvo says "105K" (Laughing on the floor I wouldn't trust the belt past 70k)
I am working on making a write up about timing belts.
I am trying to gather a bunch of belts with many milages from S70's S60's S80's and S40's then I will take pics and make an entire post about the belts and replacing them.

TECH, is the time limit predicated on beer consumption?? I have always found that the consumption is directly proportional to the time it takes to complete the job.................

RE: Volvo C70 timing belt and 90k maint question
Does the IPD tool work on 1999 and up Volvo C70 engine B5254T? When I called IPD they indicated it did not because of variable valve timing, but the support technician telling me this was not familiar with how to do change a timing belt.
Looking at alldatapro instructions seems to indicate no concern on the cams moving during the procedure.
Now i am a bit confused, when changing the timing belt some posts indicate this is a good idea to lock the cams and some seem to indicate that no tool is needed. Is the IPD tool cheap insurance or with a variable valve timing it does nothing at all?
Rgds

No special tool is needed.
Just mark from the pulleys to the top of the motor before pulling the belt. Make sure the marks are lined up before installing the belt and you will be fine.
I have done hundreds of timing belts on these cars and never used a cam tool just for the timing belt change.
I have locked the cams from the back when doing cam seals but you need to do that to make sure the VVT pulley goes back on in the correct position.
But if you aren't removing the pulleys no worries.
