So I bought a 2006 C70 about 3 months ago and have been loving it. I noticed right away it didn't seem to have much power, but that jived with the reviews saying it had no real punch. So no big deal.

So this weekend, I made a 1.5 hour drive with the family to go watch an old-timey drive-in movie. When we were almost there, I heard this whirring or whooshing sound whenever I pushed on the gas. Didn't matter what speed I went, but acceleration caused the sound. And the check engine light came on. The more gas I gave, the louder it got. So I had my mechanic friend hook it up to his computer. He said the code we got meant the turbo signal was "too high" or "too low." He couldn't work on it, so I am driving it to my closest Volvo dealership (about an hour away). Interestingly enough, while we were revving it and had his computer hooked up, it quit on us several times! It's never quit on me before now. It only did it yesterday and did not quit on the way to work this morning.

The thing still feels like it has the same acceleration and power as before--just accompanied by that loud whooshing sound when I hit the gas.

Man, talk about scared. He showed me prices... about $1000 for the turbo itself + 5 hours labor. I am worried driving it will damage it more. I am at a loss right now. And it couldn't happen at a worst time... I just bought an expensive vacation and will be gone from October 8-18th. I am leaving the car at the dealership and letting them fix it while I'm gone.

Out of Warranty already?

 

Yeah, unfortunately. It had 80k miles when I bought it a few months ago. Somebody really rode it (and abused it, I suspect).

 

You might be able to get it fixed for cheaper at a Volvo specialist shop.

 

I stayed away from the 2006 C70 as this was first year for this HT model and I found so many problems w/06 on forums. I also so a bunch of low mile 2006 C70s for sale on Ebay which seemed odd.

 

Sorry for the delay in posting, but I just got back from vacation yesterday! I left the Volvo at the shop while I was gone.

Turns out, the place that fixed it wasn't an official dealership at all, but apparently used to have a relationship with Volvo. Somehow it was severed, and they changed their name to "J.R. Vovo". Yep, that's right--they removed the "L" from "Volvo"! lol

The problem was related to my turbo, but it was just a busted hose, which they replaced and charged me an hour's labor. I also had them replace the wipers, fix the rubber skid pad-type thing under the back of the vehicle where the exhaust is, and replace two carpet fasteners that apparently the previous owner removed. They charged me about $210 total. I figure that's not so bad--heck, the wipers were $43 just by themselves.

So my car is fine and I guess I have found a discount repair place for my Volvo!

Thanks to you guys for responding to my original post. I was really worried when I wrote it!
