I just got a 2024 XC 60 recharge. I was under the impression that I could use my phone to set up a charge time that was delayed after plugging in the charging cable. I want to charge after 10 PM to get the low rate in our area. Believe it or not we have a five cent rate after 10 PM to 4 AM. Love that renewable energy got in the state of Iowa. The apps that I have on my phone does not show where I have the ability to set up a time to charge the car. Either I misunderstood or I don't know where to look which is not likely. So my option is to use a 240 V timer.
What I want to do is use a 240 Volt timer to allow current to flow to the car after 10 PM. I would plug the cable in at 4 PM in the afternoon and then the timer would allow current to flow from 10 PM to 4 AM. Of course the car will be fully charged within three or four hours.
Has anyone had experience using a 200 Volt timer to charge the car after plugging it in initially. . I don't see it as a problem but would I like to know if anyone is experience doing this.
This is what I just found out on delayed charging.
I have just recently spoken to a Volvo factory rep who is available via phone. He explained that the ability to charge at a delayed time to get the cheaper electrical rates is available in some countries, but not in the US at this time. Volvo is working on it and it will be incorporated into the app with one of the updates that’s coming. He was not sure as to what that timeline would be. So I’m going to wait until the Volvo app gets updated instead of investing a bunch of money into a wall charger. I have been using the Volvo plug-in cable that was provided with the car since my first XC 60 recharge in 2021.
Based on rates after 10 PM ( 5 cent rate - thanks renewable energy) I can charge my 2024 XC 60 for about $1.10. I can go 35 to 40 miles. on a typical SUV getting 26 miles per gallon that is about $5.40 for the same 40 miles. That is based on gas at $3.30 a gallon.

I have a 2021 XC40 Recharge and though my electricity provider (Dominion Energy) does NOT offer off-rate charging, I set up charging times directly through the System Settings, Charging, in the car to initiate charging between 2100-0600. The only thing I need to do is remember to disengage this if I am charging on the road......
greetings from Toronto Ontario. I have had my XC40 Recharge for 8 months and charge it at home every other night using the "Charge Schedule" that is built into the Volvo app. We also have ULO rates and it is currently under 3 cents / kWh from 11pm - 8am so I have the app set to begin charging at 11:15pm. When I come home from work I plug in using the 240V cable Volvo provided and the charging will begin at 115pm. I had a 240V circuit installed in my garage with a NEMA plug (ie dryer plug) and it works very well. I also set the "target battery level" in the app to 90% as per Volvo's recommendation. When I have longer trip days I set it to 100% of course.
When I am on a longer roadtrip and use a Stage 3 fast charger, I don't have to undo those settings in the app since the Fast charger app seems to do its own thing.
We use FLO and Chargepoint mainly here in Ontario and Quebec.
So when you have availability to leverage the Charge Schedule feature, I can tell you it works very well.
All my home charging is done during the ULO period. We set our dishwasher to come on after 11pm and sometimes some clothes drying as well so it's a rewiring of our brain since we went electric.
Yeah, from what I've been reading, the ability to set charging time in the Volvo app is only available on the full electric cars, not the plug in hybrids. :-( I'm looking for an inexpensive timer to add to our 240v outlet.
I did go ahead and purchase a charge point system for my garage. I’m using it for off-peak charging. I did question whether or not I can plug it in and let it sit like that until the time I wanted to charge. I plug in when I get home and then at 10:01 PM the car starts charging at a rate of five cents per kilowatt. I am going to post a screenshot of what it’s costing me. Based on these numbers it looks like I can run 30 miles for about $0.90.
