Default 01 S40 Codes P0015 + more

Hello fellow shade tree wrenchers! About 2 yrs ago got the P0015 code, and the one for the thermostat, on the 01 Volvo S40 (155k miles) Did the oil flushes to no avail. Decided to change the VVT gear even though it was replaced 4 yrs ago along with the timing belt and water pump. So I finally got it back together...one thing lead to another, ended up getting a rebuilt head from Clearwater Cylinder Heads in Florida. The valve seals needed to be replaced. Figured it best to take the head off, rather than replace seals with the head on. Since the head was off, may as well do it right and rebuild it. With machining cost and all the rest to go with it, the head from Clearwater was definitely the way to go..half the cost of doing it myself, plus a 5 yr warranty to boot! So yesterday fired it up for the first time in over a year. Started right up & ran great with no troubles(after many cranks with fuel pump fuse out and ignition coils disconneted...hopefully circulate some oil) Oil pressure, about 50 psi at 1200 rpm & 40 psi at idle. Then I noticed the cel was on. WTF!! Again with the P0015, how can this be!! Along with P0351, P0352 (both ignition related) P0128 (coolant temp) I didn't run it for more than 10 mins as it's in the garage with poor air flow, so it never got to full temp, maybe half way there. Just don't get it, possibly a sensor connection got missed, or a mis placed vacuum line? Everything appears to be as it should. The coils were replaced (volvo) 4 yrs ago. I put in a new thermostat along with a new temp sensor. I didn't replace the VVT solenoid,as its 4 yrs old. But maybe thats the reason for the P0015? Hopefully it's not a head gasket issue. Heat was coming out the vents, so coolant should be flowing as it should? Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you in advance!

See this thread for a long discussion on the P0015 code and the VVT gear/ cam position sensor faults

https://volvoforums.com/forum/volvo-...0-47208/page2/

If you reused old parts in the VVT, that may be a fault or you are a notch off on the timing belt positioning for the gear.

as to the temp issue, could be a ground wire, but there is a bleed valve to get all the air out of the cooling system (google or check Youtube for how to find it). With a recent rebuild you may need to burb the cooling system again.

Thanks, mt6127! The VVT gear is new, just not the solenoid, looks like i'll have to replace it. As for the timing, I thought it didn't matter for the VVT gear so long as the cam shaft is timed correctly? Hopefully the coolant bleed valve is easy to get at. Thanks for the link and your input!!

more reading :-) - this should help you figure out if the timing is ok.

Ok, so it turns out it was the VVT solenoid. Replaced it with a new one and all is good! Thanks for your help!
