Default 01 S40 Oil Pump Question

Hey there, have an 01 Volvo S40 with 155k miles. Currently have the top of motor apart...started with VVT gear replacement then turned into a rebuilt cylinder head from Clearwater. Anyhow, have the oil pump out to replace gasket, o-ring and crank seal. Took the oil pump apart to check pressure spring length. It measures 2.28, according to the Hayes manaul it should be 3.235 long. ??? How can there be such a difference? The spring is no longer available from dealer. Only option is a new pump. Any one run into this problem before? Oh yeah, the clearance between large gear and housing is good. Thanks for the advice!

Can't imagine that the pump would work at all if the spring length was REALLY off that much - my guess is that if the pump was working previously, it's only gonna be better with the new O-ring and gasket.

Maybe a mis- print in the manual? Don't have an oil pressure gauge, guess it was working as it should. Thanks for the input!

Probably a typo, or maybe Volvo changed their oil pump design mid-model (that kind of thing happens all the time). Unless there is some reason to doubt that the oil pressure was bad before, I'd just put it back together and not lose sleep. If the gear clearances are good, it's pretty certain that the pump will make good pressure (barring some other engine malady that makes that impossible, of course).

As far as I know it was working as it should. Did not check oil pressure before tear down. I'll clean it up good and slap it back on, thanks again
