Default '01 S40 questions

1. Is this model pre-wired for fog lamps?

2. I have smooth idle, but slight vibration "feel" in steering wheel when sitting at light. Is this of concern or pretty typical?

3. When my turn signal is on, the other lights of the dash (just in the cluster) dim alternately as the light blinks. Is this of concern?

Car has 44k and is dealer "certified"...and I will take it in if it need attention.

Thanks,
Steve

Hi Steve.

Not sure about foglight wiring (as well as switch you would need a relay & of course foglights, even if the wiring is present behind the front bumper).

Vibration could be several things - worth getting dealer to check for any fault codes first & take it from there.

However, dimming lights suggests possible charging problem & there is a chance the small vibration could be linked, so when they're checking for codes, ask them to check the alternator & battery.

Do let us know how you get on.

Most of them are prewired for foglights. But like beauty said you will need the lights, switch, relay, and fuse for them to work.

2. Get the dealer to check the engine and trans mounts. They are known to go bad.

3.Get them to check the charging system it might be getting weak.

About the dimming, I had an Eclipse with a similar prob. Headlights and dash lights would dim slightly when brakes were applied, same issue with the turn signal, heater/AC would be turned on, etc. Dealer and another garage checked electrical system any time I brought it in. Never had excess draw, alternator and battery were fine. Dealer even replaced the alternator and battery one time to appease me (it was noticable but not a danger or anything that bad), nothing changed.

Dont waste you time at the dealer for that. The lights will dim in time with the blinkers, mine does this too. The rought idel at stop is also the same as mine. If i shift into neutral it goes away. You can waste you time looking into it if you like but if the car is not stalling on you then dont waste your time and money.

I guess it depends, mine seems to idle ruff, but i am very fussy but the idle is not that bad.

I looked into the electrical thing and the only thing I could find was a power pack thing that stored and distributed the power better.

Did you get the checks done yet Steve? Interested to know the outcome.

Hi all. Sorry for the delayed follow-up. I know being part of other car forums that follow ups are important, especially when folks have the same problems down the road.

Finally got the car in to the dealer. My main concern, following the disengaged axle after day 2 of ownership (see my other post), was a clunking sound on deceleration and acceleration from a stop. So to the dealer I went with this and the list above, as well as some other small items.

The dealership told me that two bolts on the sub-frame needed to be re-torqued. What would cause them to be loose, I really don't know...d-ship just said "age". But this fixed the clunking and the vibration (I did NOT have rough idle, just a vibration in the steering wheel). I had them check the motor mounts, but they said they were fine.

They checked charging system and everything was okay, so the dimming no longer concerns me.

So, the car is back on the road and running well. (just discovered the heated side mirrors!! cool!) Wife drives 100 miles RT each day so I'm praying it will be reliable. I'm a little gun-shy because of the axle breaking loose after we bought the car, but I figure what are the chances of that happening again?

Meanwhile, I have to say the dealership has been very helpful (so far) and the 2005 S60 they loaned us for a week was suh-weeet!!

Steve
