I think I have used about 1//2 to 3/4 of a qt in the last 3000 miles or so. Does this seem normal? I see no strange smoke nor residue at the tail pipe, can see no leaks?

The owners manual says change oil every 7,500 miles ;-)

Have been using Mobile One 5w-30 should i go to the 5w-40, would 10/30 be better?

I'd say that consumption is in the acceptable range. You may want to look around for any leaks (particularly up front by the VVT seals). If you were down a quart after 1000 miles then there'd be some concern (ie a leaky seal, valve stem seals or worn oil rings etc)

In terms of the oil weight, best choice depends on your local climate and driving style. adding a location to your sig helps :-) The owners manual gives some flexibility, but preferences are given if you drive in extreme cold (say below zero F) or hot (over 100F) regularly. I live in CT and use 5w-30 as my norm (we saw -15 this winter). If you are in warm, ie Texas, I'd go 5W-40.
