05 s40 whine noise power steering pump problem solved
I just bought a 2005 S40 with 138k. It had a whine coming from behind the passenger headlight around the belt area. After replacing the PCV (oil separator) I still had a whine...
The whine is constant at idle but when you start to turn the wheel it changes pitch slightly or goes away all together. I brought the car to the dealer they told me this noise is normal. The electronic steering gets noisy and the pump was later updated to fix this problem. He printed out and gave me the service bulletin explaining how to check this if a customer complains about the noise. I could not find a link to the file but I will explain the steps involved and the solution I came up with to quiet down the noise
First jack up the car and remove the passenger side wheel
next remove the splash guard. Remove the allen head screws and two 10mm size bolts
The electronic power steering pump is located to the right of the wheel well toward the front of the car. Its metallic on bottom and plastic on top
You should first check that the pump is not in contact with the A/C dryer and that all the rubber mounts are there and in good condition. If you watch the following video hopefully you can hear the difference.
I decided there was no reason it should be making noise other then the bad design of the pump so I quieted it down by wrapping it in a layer of and then electrical tape.
Now the noise almost doesn't exist at all! I have to really stick my head down by the wheel to hear any whine at all!
After searching all over for info about this problem I couldn't find anything so I decided to post this to try and help others out. GOOD LUCK!

When the wheel and splashguard is removed is the cable/connectors accessable on the power steering pump (EPS) ? it seems at the picture that the AC compressor is blocking it?
Want to get sure that there are no corrosion or something on the connectors
